According to the Park, the Jones Road parking area should be open prior to May 25, 2019 and after September 2, 2019. The trail is relatively shaded and well manicured mix of gravel & paved.
The take out in Spring or Fall is at Jones Road, just before the US 40 bridge across the Gunpowder (if coming from the East) or just after (if coming from the west).
Be smart. Below I-95, the easy line is to stay center left, although there are some slot moves to play with, if you stay to the right.
This work givezs AW strong ties to the community (the place is also a fishing access) and local park managers. The typical put-in for the Lower GunPowder is at the US1/Belair Road Bridge. !Loved this trail. You can walk with a friend, jog, bike ride, even horseback! The Big Gunpowder River starts in Pennsylvania and flows through Maryland into Cheaspeake Bay. Very limited mud considering it has been raining heavily in the days leading up. At lower levels there are not too many playspots. The Big Gunpowder Falls River is absolutely a dream come true for anglers looking to reel in some high-quality trout. The rapid was formed by a long gone Dam that left a rocky delta on river right that pushes the river to the left and a large rock just downstream on river left that pushes the river to the right . "Pots 2" (Mile 1.2) - Below the pool at the bottom of "Pot Rocks", class II rocky rapids continue, ending with a channel that splits evenly on a rock -- the easiest line is to move from left to right above the rock, but a right to left move is also possible.
The virtual gauge is pretty reliable in demonstrating that if the virtual level is less than 333 cfs, the lower gunpowder is not running (type one error) but is very unreliable in demonstrating that it IS running if the level is over 333 cfs (type two error).

Northwest of Gunpowder Falls State Park, the largest state park in Maryland, includes several parcels along the river. takeout, so don't leave your boat or gear unattended or leave anything of value visible in your car. From this eddy, run the tongue in the center (or a little right of center) on the final drop and eddy out. The eddy at the bottom of the rapid on river right is really great for enders and cartwheels. Also, US 40 in the vicinity of the river has been marked "No Parking" by the Baltimore County Police. Higher than 1.25' is a fun, fast run, but most of the play spots wash out or get vicious and trashy. This series of rapids ends at MD 7 (Philadelphia Rd). There has been some theft problems at the Jones Rd. According to the Park, the Jones Road parking area should be open prior to May 28, 2016 and after September 5, 2016. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Lots of noise from inner tubers on the river.Very nice trail. But no visible trail to hike to any waterfalls or anything Great Thanksgiving morning hike. The Gunpowder flows out of Pretty Boy Reservoir. Since Wednesday evening the releases from Prettyboy dam have dropped from 85 to sub 30cfs. Below Falls road, the river flattens out and has deeper longer runs. Again in 2019, the gate at the Jones Road take-out will be closed from Memorial Day weekend (May 25, 2019) through Labor Day weekend (reopening September 3, 2019).
According to the Park, the Jones Road parking area should be open after September 7, 2020. to arrive to the main town from your zipcode. At 3" it isnt too scrapy, 6" is getting better, and I would consider 1' to be the optimum. We suggest $20 for the full season; $5 for one weekend. This year he rebuilt the change house and porta-pot shelter, set AW's sign back up, filled in potholes, and mowed acres of grass. Beautiful area!
Or you can thru hike it in a day. You run this rapid in the center prepared to make a few sudden moves to accommodate the sudden appearence of rocks to be avoided or hit as necessary.
