I figured they would make an interesting comparison.The Kill Devil brand belongs to Hunter Laing from Scotland. By 1779 Archibold Sterling was selling rum out of the first floor of the estates, Great House, and a Jamaican rum legacy was born. But for the purposes of this review, let me take advantage of the fact that the comparisons are being discussed.
Bottled at 46% and 7 years of age, it was fully matured in the Tropics. The Blend inside consists of 80% OWH (Owen W Hussey) and 20% DOK (Dermot Owen Kelly-Lawson) the former is the lowest marque of esters made by Hampden, ranging from 40 to 80 gr/hl AA. Neither fruit or wood are overpowering.I keep finding it amazing how wide the flavour spectrum of Hampden rum is, even though there is a clear signature.

Actually, I often have to tell myself that I should review rum from other countries more….but it’s hard to stay away from Jamaica. I don’t see any other rum like Hampden in this price range, despite there being other Jamaican rum on the market.One more note: There is an inconsistency with the age statement. The rum in the bottle and the glass has a bright golden amber color. The finish is very long and mouth coating.
The main reason for buying it … The savory notes found in the aroma and palate were surprising in the best of ways and are just one of the funky puzzle pieces I discovered during the review. Before, the blends in the previous rums were blended by Mr. Gargano. For me, this is clearly sipping rum; I could not imagine mixing or diluting this product down as I enjoyed the purity of what the blender created. The main reason for buying it was me being curious to know what this longer continental ageing does to a lively spirit like this. But the burnt plastic makes is something I usually get over proof spirits. The heavier parts of the rum offer an alluring seduction towards further nosing and enjoyment of the complexity of it all. Not as complex, I have to dig in more to find stuffPineapple, banana, wood, raisins, mint, hint of cheese. 60° After sitting in a barrel in the UK for 16 years it’s become quite a woody rum.

Third and last, it’s the distillery edition and in my experience these bottlings are mostly astonishing.The presentation of the bottle is wonderful too, the stately bottle and beautiful label presupposes an astonishing rum.Let’s go over the specs real quick and then it’s tasting time.Though there is no age statement on the bottle, it’s said that the rum inside was aged for around 7 to 8 years. Basically, it’s an indication for how funky the rum will be. Sulphur is something I don’t really want to come across in rum and this one has it plenty.
