Depending on which route you take, it can be made into a short hike, or a long hike if you start at Browns Gap for example. Nearby mountains of the Pisgah National Forest roll in the distance and stretch far onto the horizon. The AT and Max Patch Trail continue straight climbing the mountain. it was a busy hike with lots of families but there was plenty of little stops and nooks for pictures so families stepped aside and distancing was easy. Except for the dramatic approach to Max Patch this section of the AT is mainly rolling soft hills that a novice hiker would not realize the 10 miles or so you would log at the end of the day. In the absence of trees on this sun-drenched bald, wooden posts with the AT’s iconic white rectangular blaze mark the trail. It contains quite a few more hiking trails and attractions to explore. Max Patch Loop via Appalachian Trail is a 1.5 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Hot Springs, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The Max Patch Loop Trail encircles the base connecting to the SR 1182 parking lot and the Buckeye Ridge Trail [304] . The trails on Max Patch are fairly well-signed, although a few confusing spots do exist - so bring a map and pay attention. At the top it is spectacular. I know it may be boring to some, but helpful to most. Max Patch was cleared for grazing in the 1800's and is now maintained by the USFS by prescribed burns as, if left to nature, this beautiful jewel would return to the forest in less than two generations. Go 3.5 miles - up the mountain - to Max Patch Road.From here, turn right and go 1.4 miles to the parking area for Max Patch Mountain. I would go as far as saying anyone that can walk, can make this hike. Pretty easy hike. Great trial with amazing views. I was wrong! The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from February until October. Large flat area on the top of the summit with lots of sites for tent camping. Lots of campers, but lots of room for everyone. I would recommend an SUV or truck and you can’t go more than 20 mph for most of it. This easy, short trail has amazing payoff for minimal work! Parking is limited, so getting started in the morning is ideal, even though parking on side of road is an option. Views were awesome, and the hike was easy. And water source is plentiful if you know where to look. We went for a sunrise hike, which was too gorgeous for words. Bugs are a pain in the butt, so be sure to bring bug spray otherwise those chiggers will make you miserable, just fyi.Was really unprepared for what a popular hike this is. Vast panoramas open in all directions, with views stretching 360 degrees around the grassy mountain. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Beautiful 360° views. lots of signs for snakes but we didn't see any. This is Max Patch, a popular, iconic, almost idyllic bald summit on the Appalachian Trail that’s beloved by hardcore AT thru-hikers, casual day hikers and frisbee-flingers alike. The sign is correct about the easiest path is to the left.
We started at Sams Gap and hiked 43 miles generally downhill into Hot Springs. It’s way out there so I foolishly assumed it wouldn’t be on many people’s radar. Would love to see the sunrise or sunset. Saw two cars out of commission on the side of the road on the way in good conditions.
