Hanna Rosin is the co-host of NPR's Invisibilia podcast. femm.

If you're someone who claims the mantel of feminism, who believes in the innate equality of all genders, who thinks that solidarity among communities of women is a core component of the world you want to live in, I strongly encourage you to read Mikki Kendall's debut essay collection, As the subtitle makes clear, Kendall's central thesis is that mainstream feminism in the United States has been anything but inclusive, despite being "a movement that draws much of its strength from the claim that it represents over half of the world's population." Others, such as "Black Girls Don't Have Eating Disorders" and "The Hood Doesn't Hate Smart People," challenge harmful myths that, in the case of the former, can lead to young women not getting the help and support they need and, in the latter, perpetuate race- and class-based stereotypes. She is talked about openly as one of the great feminist figures of our time, and so I just figured she thought of herself that way.

"Jolene" is a song that was translated into, I think, 40 different languages, and there are 200 different covers.

Dolly's concert-attending fan base is composed of people we don't think of having a lot in common these days. 1960s Dolly is just an ocean of pain in her songs — mostly witnessing the female pain around her, I think, in her community growing up.It's a really interesting, almost musical form of journalism that you're seeing in that early work.
Christine de Carvalho/WNYC 'Hood Feminism' During The COVID-19 Pandemic : Code Switch The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated issues that disproportionately affect women. So yeah, it was interesting to see the ways in which she very much walks the walk, but doesn't quite want to talk the talk, because she knows how that might be perceived by certain segments of her audience. There was a moment when we began to ask her questions about some of her early music, which no one ever asks her about, and her songwriting, which very few people ask her about. According to their website, .femm is a "feminist cyberqueer nerd palooza." But clearly she has a complicated relationship to that term, as do many people who grew up in places in America that aren't the coasts. Are they arguing about politics and coming to some new understanding?

If feminism is to truly represent all women, it must resist the "tendency to assume that all women are experiencing the same struggles [which] has led us to a place where reproductive health imagery centers on cisgender able-bodied women to the exclusion of those who are trans, intersex, or otherwise inhabiting bodies that don't fit the narrow idea that genitalia dictates gender. 'Hood Feminism' Is A Call For Solidarity In Less-Than-Inclusive Movement Mikki Kendall reveals how feminism has failed to consider populations … "I Will Always Love You" is a song that hit No. And I think when she saw that we were taking her really, really seriously as a songwriter and as a person who is one of the great creative spirits of the last 60 years, she was willing to answer almost any question. No, that's sort of the question that never resolves for me. Nerdette Podcast A safe space for nerding out about all the things you're watching, reading, listening to and encountering in real life. It's hosted by self … Feminist Current Podcasts.

Probably not. Vancouver, BC About Podcast Feminist Current is Canada's leading … "You've got evangelical church ladies standing next to men in drag — Dolly is massive in the LGBTQ community — standing next to guys in trucker hats," Abumrad says. "Even as she acknowledges that the path will be difficult, Kendall lays out in That will require serious work, but it is the work that any of us who call ourselves feminists must commit to. She's also the author of "The End Of Men: And The Rise Of Women," which made a big … Regardless of the topic, each chapter is designed to "focus largely on the experiences of the marginalized, and address the issues faced by most women, instead of the issues that only concern a few — as has been the common practice of feminists to date — because tackling those larger issues is key to equality for all women. Hear the story in the audio player above and read on for an edited transcript of their conversation. She told me in one interview — she wasn't sure if this was true — but she may have written "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" on the same night. The public radio host saw something in the iconic country singer — the way she's composed of contradictions — that seemed somehow revelatory of the country as a whole. The image that runs through the entire series is what it is like to be at a Dolly concert. "Those already familiar with Kendall as a leader in Black feminist thought won't be surprised that Throughout, Kendall thoughtfully and deliberately takes mainstream feminism to task for failing to take on the fight of Black maternal mortality, for an overdependence on carceral solutions, for not "considering who is being put at risk by the ways that racist tropes are bolstered in feminist circles," especially when considering that "white men are the most likely of all groups of men to commit sexual assault. And that happened on the Yeah, I think so. "She focuses again and again on the need to expand the range of what is considered a feminist issue. That feels like something to me.I mean, she's so deeply apolitical, at least in what she says, that I think she protects that space by choosing not to speak on certain topics.
And I don't think she's avoiding something so much as she's sort of putting her foot down in a different spot. The fact that that space even exists in America right now is heartening to me. I mean, that's certainly what she said to me. NPR's Ari Shapiro spoke to Abumrad about reexamining Dolly's cultural legacy, including her overlooked musical genius, her ability to exist as a container for …
