Brilliant book must read if you like true life booksReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2017
He wrote the famous novel Papillon, a memoir of his incarceration in and escape from a penal colony in French Guiana. Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2012. It's a fascinating insight into the penal colonies, the different cultural landscapes at the time and on top of that it's a brilliant story. Both are great, but, as usual, the book gives so much more insight to the story. Banco the Further Adventures of Papillon

The feeling you get from the pages really inspire, disturb, and infect you with the feeling of what life was like in the French penal colony of Devil's Island. Sold 4 million copies in France in 4 years from being published in 1969. Initially I was worried that it would be quite hard going and repetitive, but Charrière even manages to make accounts of his time in solitary confinement utterly gripping. The cinematic portraits of Papillon do not do justice to what it must have actually been like. Well done Papillon!

The book after purchasing a few days ago as fell apart I understand it’s a paperback but I’ve owned many that’s not done what this as and doesn’t seem that it will hold up to pass on for family members to enjoy. Was translated into dozens of languages and it inspired a major Hollywood movie, with Dustin Hoffman and I believe Steve McQueen, which was a dud.
