What we found was a group of parents sharing their experiences of supporting, loving, and advocating for their LGBTQ loved ones. To serve in PFLAG is a way to pay it forward and help those who may find themselves in the same place our family was at the beginning of our journey. PFLAG took our family by the hand, loved us, supported us, and most importantly, educated us! I serve because I want the next family that takes a flyer, comes to an event, or comes to a support group to know that, like us, they are not alone.When we began our journey with our transgender daughter, we felt like were floating in the ocean all alone. The first formal meeting took place in Mar Alex, Sarah, Emma Kate, Andrew, and Luke–my precious family and me. It started with the personal – I have a transgender son and a non-binary grandchild and I needed to better understand the issues and challenges in their lives and how to better support them.

After many gay and lesbian people ran up to Jeanne during the parade and begged her to talk to their parents, she decided to begin a support group. While it was officially a naval flag used by Canadian ships starting in the 1890s, the Canadian Red Ensign — a combination of the Union Jack and the shield of Canada — had been used unofficially both at sea and on land since the 1870s and was widely recognized as a national symbol. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., the National Board of Directors and 13 volunteer Regional Directors.PFLAG Charlotte, founded in 1987, is a chapter of PFLAG National. I am primarily driven by a deep belief that every person in the LGBTQ community deserves to be affirmed for who they are; they deserve respect, dignity and equality.PFLAG plays such an important role in our community, and I knew from the first time I was introduced to the organization at Pride six years ago that I had to be a part of the work it’s doing. As of November 2014 PFLAG Canada has over 70 chapters and/or contacts in nine Canadian provinces.
Attending a parade with her gay son, Jeanne won the hearts of many gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people who begged her to speak with their parents. The LGBTQ community is part of my family, my friends, my students, and myself. PFLAG Charlotte is a registered 501(c)(3). In Toronto in the 1970s, meetings of non-LGBT but welcoming family members were held under the banner of Parents Of Gays (POG).
PFLAG brings me joy, challenges, strength, and new friends. A lifesaver and game-changer, PFLAG meets us, When we needed it most, PFLAG was our family’s lifeline. In 1981 PFLAG became the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and in 1982 PFLAG became incorporated as a national organization. The idea for PFLAG started in 1972, when Manford marched in New York's Christopher Street Liberation Day March, the precursor to today's Pride parade, with her son, Morty, who is gay.By 1980, the group was distributing educational literature to educational and faith organizations nationwide.
