While Caneel Bay Resort remains in tatters, other Caribbean resorts that were damaged by Irma and Maria have rebuilt. Caneel also cared well for the donkeys and deer.
As long as Mr. Engle doesn't get an extension, the primary threat would seem to be the potential for groundwater contamination and damage from hydrocarbons which most likely won't be remedied until the National Park Service has full control of the property. "In his letter, Willens also revisited a topic that Johnson had raised: the need to conduct more extensive environmental testing of the resort's property.A 2014 environmental assessment of the property raised questions of contamination from SVOCs -- semivolatile organic compounds -- often related to pesticides, and arsenic, according to some of the documents "In addition, there are concerns for leachability of SVOCs, arsenic and mercury to groundwater," the consultant's report noted.
It doesn't appear that Mr. Engle is willing or able to perform any new development on the property without assurances of his controlling the site long past 2023. The ambiance of this resort is like nowhere else.

It is a shame to lose sight of that significant benefit to the island. However, just quoting this NPT article, the national park's superintendent was forced to write that "half of a historic plantation's slave village" and "prehistoric ceremonial sites" were damaged or destroyed to install diesel tanks, tennis courts, swimming pools, and sidewalks, while mechanized clearing of areas along the shore resulted in "the disturbance and erosion of materials from both the prehistoric record and the first European settlements on the island." Caneel Bay Resort today announced that a new restaurant and beach bar, ZoZo’s at Caneel Bay®, will open in the space previously occupied by the Beach Bar and Grill on Caneel Beach, St. John. The groundskeepers did an outstanding job caring for that property - far more meticulously and sensitively than a national Park crew might.

However, the truth is that, due to this scheme that CBI Acquisitions has going, Caneel Bay hasn't really been any "huge source of employment" and certainly no "boost to the St. John economy" in years. Thank you for sharing some wonderful memories of past stays at Caneel Bay Resort with your husband. Sad sad sad.I have been to St John several times & have stayed at Caneel each time.My first trip was in July 1966 - my honeymoon.
